Accessibility Statement
Last Updated: May 2026
Parenthood Japan is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability, device, language background, or digital experience. As a non-profit community platform built for international and multicultural families in Japan, we believe that access to information and community should never be a barrier. Every parent, guardian, and caregiver who visits our website deserves a clear, comfortable, and inclusive experience.
Our Commitment to Accessibility
Parenthood Japan is dedicated to making our website as accessible and usable as possible for all visitors. This includes people who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, keyboard navigation, or voice control software, as well as users who rely on high contrast display settings, text resizing, or other accessibility features built into modern browsers and operating systems.
We recognise that accessibility is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing commitment. We are actively working to identify and address barriers on our website and to ensure that new content and features are developed with accessibility in mind from the outset.
Our goal is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, which are the internationally recognised standards for web accessibility published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines are organised around four core principles: that web content must be Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.
What We Are Doing
We are taking a number of steps to improve the accessibility of our website and to maintain those improvements over time. We aim to provide meaningful alternative text for all images published on our website, so that users who cannot see images, including those using screen readers, can still understand the content and context those images are intended to convey.

We structure our content using clear and consistent heading hierarchies, which allows users who navigate by headings to move through our pages quickly and efficiently. This is a common and important practice for screen reader users. We strive to ensure that all content on our website is accessible using a keyboard alone, without requiring the use of a mouse or touchscreen. This is particularly important for users with motor impairments who rely on keyboard navigation or switch access devices.

We aim to maintain sufficient colour contrast between text and background throughout our website so that our content is readable by users with low vision or colour vision differences. We also avoid relying on colour alone to convey important information.

We design our website to be responsive and usable across a range of devices and screen sizes, including smartphones and tablets, recognising that many of our users, particularly parents on the go, access our content primarily on mobile devices.

We write our content in plain, clear English and aim to avoid unnecessarily complex language. As a platform serving multicultural and multilingual families, we understand that English may not be the first language of all our readers, and we try to communicate as clearly and simply as possible without losing accuracy or nuance.

We periodically review our website to identify accessibility issues and work to resolve them in a timely manner. Where third party tools or embedded content are used, we seek to select providers who share our commitment to accessibility standards.
Known Limitations
While we are committed to making our website as accessible as possible, we acknowledge that there may currently be areas that do not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. We are a small non-profit organisation, and improving accessibility is a continuous process that we are working through systematically.

Some third party content embedded on our website, such as social media feeds, external maps, or embedded forms from partner platforms, may not be fully within our control. In these cases, we will do our best to provide accessible alternatives or supplementary information where possible.

If you encounter a specific barrier or area of our website that is difficult or impossible for you to access, we genuinely want to hear about it. Your feedback directly helps us prioritise our accessibility improvements.
Assistive Technology Compatibility
Parenthood Japan is designed to be compatible with the assistive technologies commonly used by people with disabilities. Our website is intended to work with recent versions of major screen readers including JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver on Apple devices, and TalkBack on Android devices, used in combination with modern web browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge.

We also aim to ensure that our website functions correctly when users increase text size, change display settings, or use browser level accessibility features such as Reader Mode or high contrast themes.
Multilingual and Cultural Accessibility
Parenthood Japan serves a deeply diverse community of families from across the world who are living in Japan. We recognise that accessibility extends beyond technical standards to include linguistic and cultural inclusion.

Our website is published primarily in English as a common language for our international audience. We encourage users who experience difficulty understanding our content to make use of browser based translation tools such as Google Translate, which can be activated directly in most modern browsers. While machine translation is not perfect, it can provide a helpful starting point for non-English speakers accessing our content.

We are committed to ensuring that our content does not unintentionally exclude families from any cultural, religious, or linguistic background. If you feel that any content on our website is inaccessible, culturally insensitive, or difficult to understand, please let us know and we will take your feedback seriously.
Feedback and Contact
We welcome feedback from all users about the accessibility of our website. If you experience any difficulty accessing content, encounter a barrier that prevents you from using any part of our website, or have a suggestion for how we can improve accessibility, please get in touch with us.

We are committed to responding to accessibility related feedback promptly and to working with you to provide the information or assistance you need. If the content or feature you need is not accessible in its current form, we will do our best to provide it in an alternative format upon request.

We aim to acknowledge all accessibility related enquiries within five business days and to provide a full response or resolution within a reasonable timeframe.
Enforcement and Formal Complaints
Parenthood Japan is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Japan. While Japan does not currently have a specific statutory requirement for private websites to meet web accessibility standards equivalent to those in some other countries, we voluntarily commit to the WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines as a matter of principle and community responsibility.

If you have raised an accessibility concern with us and feel that your concern has not been adequately addressed, or if you wish to escalate a formal complaint, please contact us at hello@parenthoodjapan.com with the subject line Accessibility Complaint and we will ensure your concern is reviewed by a senior member of our team.
Updates to This Statement
This Accessibility Statement will be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect improvements to our website, changes in accessibility standards, and feedback received from our users. The date of the most recent update is shown at the top of this page.

We are committed to making continuous progress on accessibility and to being transparent about where we are in that journey. Thank you for helping us build a platform that truly works for every family in Japan.
